Doctoral thesis defence

Prepare your thesis file and follow its review through the school’s scientific bodies.

The pathway below follows ESSBO’s local procedure, on a page dated 22 July 2024. Confirm the conditions for your registration and the schedule with postgraduate services before submission.

  1. Eligibility

Registration, training, publication and research integrity.

Under the published local procedure, the dossier requires registration certificates, validation of 180 doctoral training points, and a publication meeting MESRS criteria with the candidate as first author and ESSBO affiliation. The postgraduate directorate checks similarity; a similarity score alone does not establish the absence of plagiarism.

  2. Dossier

Candidate and supervisor: thesis, evidence, reports and proposed jury.

Candidate: thesis following the guide, article and official link, scientific activity certificates and Annex 3. Supervisor: Annexes 1 and 2 and proposed jury. Prepare signed PDF files.

  3. Department submission

The local procedure provides for supervisor submission at least eight days before the School Scientific Council.

The supervisor submits the complete dossier to the department using the medium required by the ESSBO procedure. The thesis title must match the PROGRES record.

  4. Scientific review

Doctoral Training Committee, Department Scientific Committee, then School Scientific Council.

The doctoral committee assesses the scientific dossier; the departmental committee checks compliance; the School Scientific Council approves the proposed jury before referral to the director.

  5. Jury and PROGRES

Director’s decision precedes final validation by postgraduate services.

After the jury appointment decision is signed, postgraduate services validate the dossier and send the thesis to members through PROGRES.

  6. Assessment and authorisation

Jury reports, synthesis, authorisation and announcement.

Members submit Annex 5 through PROGRES. The jury chair prepares the synthesis; the director issues authorisation, followed by the official announcement.

  7. Public defence

Defence record and clearance of corrections.

Retain the defence record and the record clearing corrections (Annex 6).

  8. After the defence

Corrected thesis, PROGRES deposit and final degree dossier.

Submit the corrected thesis, defence record, Annex 6 and PROGRES deposit certificate. The degree is issued after full scientific and administrative validation.
